The past semester of the Hospitality and Tourism Degree Program through Monroe College for me was a test of discipline, perseverance, gratitude and a need to excel. Having started the semester with four courses and still occupying an eight hour job, I had to make the ultimate sacrifice to remain focused in achieving my goal of a successful completion. The four managerial courses which I undertook set the basis for the learning quest which I had ventured into. The added bonus was that the Monroe College Faculty and Administrative Body were actively a part of my learning experience. It was a wonderful feeling knowing that my concerns were addressed promptly, and that the atmosphere was very conducive to learning. An interesting part of my learning experience is the focus on not only academic skills but also soft skills. Presentations both written and oral were expected to be a part of the syllabus of every course. This experience aided me in becoming a more effective speaker and writer; thus enhancing my professionalism. The Semester ended in celebration as the honors students were treated to a "PandD" Ball. I was ecstatic to be a part of the invitees as I was enrolled on the President's Honors List. I attained a 3.80 GPA.
As I anticipate the completion of yet another semester; that being my final semester; I am driven by an immense passion to excel even more and to graduate successfully with First Class Honors; this being my short term goal. Achieving this will bring me closer to attaining my long term career goal of becoming a fully qualified and experienced Hospitality Professional in the lead managerial post I may occupy in the future. The five managerial courses which I undertook are five ofthe most challenging. One of the peak interests of the final semester is the mandatory research paper. The topic of Culinary Tourism which I have chosen is of particular interest to me; as in my research I explore the possibility of Culinary Tourism initiatives in the Region and in my country S1. Lucia. One possibility of sustaining the Industry as the Region faces the impacts of a decline in visitors due to the recent Recession.
I would like to thank the CHTAEF for investing in my education and assisting me in accomplishing my career goals within the Hospitality Industry; as we work together to achieving the vision set by the mission "To foster a world-class force of Caribbean professionals in hospitality by providing development opportunities through scholarships, grants and career awareness.
