Maxine Pierre
I have just completed my first year at Florida International University, (FIU). This school year has been wonderful; filled with new and exciting experiences. Coming from the small Caribbean island of Grenada into the busy life of Miami was initially “culture shock.” However, once settled I was able to focus on my academic goals, work hard and achieve the objectives I had set for myself.

Some may say that I have chosen hospitality management because of my experience in the catering business through cake decorating with mother While this may be true, I also have a passion for the natural beauty and culture that is unique to Grenada. I hope to promote this exquisite island on a large scale in the future from the knowledge I would have gained from FIU.

As a student at FIU, I have been involved in the West Indian Student Association, WISA, and the launch of a new hospitality group, CHEERS; Clubs Hotels Entertainment Education Restaurants and Socials. Networking in these groups have definitely helped me with adapting to the change in environment, getting involved with campus activities and learning and exchanging coping skills for university life. Over this past year, I have also been exposed to the “dorm life” at the Bay Vista Hall.

Presently, I am on short vacation with my family, after which I will return to Grenada and hopefully begin a job in the hospitality industry, for my internship.

The Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association Education Foundation, together with Virgin Holidays has provided me with an opportunity that would not have been possible without them. I feel truly blessed and I am very grateful everyday for this award.

Looking forward to my second year as the 2008 Virgin Holidays Scholar!
