O’neal Richards
I was the proud recipient of a Professional Development Scholarship last year, which afforded me the opportunity to attend and successfully complete the International General Managers Program at Cornell University’s School of Hospitality Management in Ithaca, New York. The course provided me with much needed pertinent, specific, applicable and workable solutions to real time issues and demands.
At my property level, I have utilized the newly acquired skills in areas such as Human Resource/Training, Financial Management, Product Development and Guest Relations. I also gained an invaluable connection to an international network of elite hoteliers from within the program and around the world. Presently we are still in touch via an internet group forum where we are able to exchange ideas. This active network has truly proven to be useful in the present economic times. Regardless of our remote locations around the globe we can share thoughts on issues like cost cutting measures, creatively exploring alternative revenue options, developing new distribution channels and on the latest operational trends in the industry.
It was truly a unique learning experience with a global perspective and a fantastic opportunity to develop knowledge and skills of an industry leader. In my hotel, and community I have confidently continued to share my experiences with staff, students and individuals who are interested in pursuing a career in Hospitality Management. The vast majority now considers me to be a local and “real” role model- someone they hope to emulate.
Thank you to the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association Education Foundation for the incredible opportunity to improve both myself, and local industry!
