TIFFANY ROBERTS, Antiguan – Virgin Holidays Scholar 2009
University of the West Indies, Open Campus, Antigua

The journey has begun and it has been a good so far. I would like to thank Virgin Holidays through CHTAEF for making sure that my career path in life is a productive one by offering me this scholarship for academic growth. Thank-you Virgin Holidays. When I applied for the scholarship from CHTA Education Foundation, I did so to be able to acquire the necessary academic and professionalism training to become a more effective leader in my role as a supervisor. I always loved the tourism industry and thought this would be a good way for me to strengthen our very prominent industry.

The Associates Business Management degree course began in late September 2009 and I was very fortunate to have attended an orientation which I found very helpful in preparing me for the years ahead. Having been out of school for a few years, I initially found the courses a bit challenging. However, as I progressed I have found myself slowly adapting to the study mode.

In September I started at Jumby Bay, A Rosewood Resort, in a similar role to my past position at Carlisle Bay, as the Front Office supervisor. My new employer has been very supportive in allowing me the time to attend classes and so far has been very flexible with the schedule which has allowed me time to focus on my studies.

Now that I am more settled, I have found the classes to be very interesting and meaningful to my development. This semester I am doing two (2) courses namely Introduction to Computers and Caribbean Civilisation.

The courses also have a telecommuting or online component which has allowed me the opportunity to interact with my fellow colleagues in different countries. So far I have had to submit two (2) assignments and I am happy to report that they were submitted on time and were done to the best of my ability.

I still remain very confident that after completing my courses it will enable me to have the skills and qualities of an effective leader in the evolving industry. In addition I continue to be on the path to apply my skills in turning every guest into a repeat guest, making Jumby Bay, A Rosewood Resort, and Antigua, a hotel and destination to remember and recommend.
