A Snapshot of the State of Tourism in Curacao

CHATA offered an update on the hotel performance and state of our tourism industry calling for all partners to work together in order to achieve an increase in occupancy and room nights at its third quarter Member Meeting.

Edward Suares (CTB) gave an update on the ‘’Right Now in Curaçao’’ campaign explaining the progress that has been made and gave a glimpse into the new commercial featuring our own Churandy Martina. He also shared tips on the current trends in Europe. Joanie van der Sande (Auxilia) gave an inspiring out-of-the-box outlook on personal leadership and personal development. Her speech was highlighted by the topic of personal integrity which is a hot topic in Curaçao. Kimberley De L’isle of VanEps Kunneman vanDoorne law firm elaborated ‘’No work, No pay’’ principle, suspension of employees and maternity leave among other employee benefits. CHATA shed a light on this particular topic since various members had questions in regards to the general strike of a few weeks ago.

Annaleen Bobb (IATA Caribbean Area Manager) gave an update on the airline industry and how Caribbean airports are performing. She elaborated on the expected increase in travelers in the Caribbean and how governments can make or break a destination with unnecessary regulations. During the lunch provided by the Curaçao Culinary Team, Christine Birkner (Adweek) talked about how hotels in Curaçao can attract millennial travelers which are more prone to book a stay on AirBnb. She recommended that hotels invest in guest research and make sure each location and/or room has a different vibe and aura to them.
