A Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association (CHTA) survey of a small sample of its membership regarding sargassum’s impact in recent months has revealed that some Caribbean hotels are receiving queries and cancellations by prospective guests. Some hotels directly impacted by sargassum are incurring cleanup and other costs.
CHTA, which is part of a network that provides scientific monitoring of the problem and its prevalence, continues to send support information to national hotel and tourism associations and hotels on ways to handle the problem. As of late August, the University of South Florida Optical Oceanography Laboratory forecast continued sporadic incidents of sargassum in the region through October.
Hotels and businesses needing more information on responding to sargassum, can find resources in the Publications section of CHTA’s online Knowledge Center: http://www.caribbeanhotelandtourism.com/publications/. A helpful infographic can be found here: https://tinyurl.com/yc8thvfr.
