Richard S. Kahn, president of KTCpr, has been named Chairman of the CHTA Education Foundation, following outgoing Chairman Tom Pas, who decided to step down after dedicating 16 years to the creation of opportunities for promising Caribbean students who lacked the financial resources to pursue a career in tourism. James Weitkamp, vice president of Harbor Linen, has been appointed Deputy Chairman and will assist Kahn with the difficult task of following in Pas' momentous footsteps. "Tom Pas took a very small charitable endeavor which provided minimal assistance to a very small number of students, and turned it into a major charity organization with corporate sponsorships and fundraising activities on a global level," said Kahn. "His tireless efforts and years of dedication continue to influence us as we continue to progress along the path Tom has charted for us."
The CHTAEF New York Times Travel Show Silent Charity Auction has been hailed as a major success. Despite receiving significantly fewer hotels stays due to the show's scheduling conflict with Caribbean Travel Marketplace – the traditional staging area for the Foundation's outreach to hoteliers – a bidding frenzy ensued the likes of which CHTAEF volunteers have never seen before. "While we had fewer stays that previous years, bidders became even more competitive and we ended up collecting more for each stay," said Ernest Dwight, CHTAEF Board member and president of SouthWood Corporation.
The CHTA Education Foundation received monetary donations from Interval International, Starwood Hotels & Resorts and Virgin Holidays at Caribbean Travel Marketplace. We appreciate the donations made by these partners as well as from others who have helped make us make scholarships available to deserving.
